Connecting Blue Economy Innovators

On October 28, our team collaborated with Bushra Razack from SWEAT Africa and our partners at Swahili Beach Hotel to host an intimate, last-minute side event called SWEAT by the Sea. Designed to bring together local founders and ecosystem builders from the blue and creative economies, the morning provided an unscripted, casual space for honest dialogue, networking, and collaborative problem-solving right on our doorstep in Diani.

The gathering kicked off with the participants introducing themselves, and sharing what drives their work along the Kenyan coast. Bushra then explained the core mission of SWEAT Africa, emphasizing that building a thriving blue economy requires nurturing the broader ecosystem surrounding entrepreneurs just as much as supporting the enterprises themselves. Rather than sticking strictly to a traditional meeting setup, we took the ecosystem conversation directly into the coastal waters. With low tide approaching, everyone pulled on dive booties for an interactive Rockpool Safari along the intertidal zone. Armed with marine animal bingo cards, our group of entepreneurs who had never met before set off to the rockpools to search for sea creatures while tackling two guiding questions: What could we make possible together? and What is one challenge in your work that you can't solve alone?

The combination of playful ocean exploration, friendly competition, and open conversation sparked meaningful insights. Navigating the tide pools together allowed participants to talk candidly about common hurdles, ranging from funding and community integration to policy frameworks, and discuss how cross-sector collaboration could unlock new solutions.

After our Rockpool safari, everyone gathered over lunch to share their marine bingo discoveries and synthesize the day’s discussions. The takeaways and connections established during SWEAT by the Sea will help feed directly into the lead-up to SWEAT Africa 2027, laying the groundwork for future founder-funder matchmaking and ongoing support for coastal marine innovation.

We extend a warm thank you to Bushra and SWEAT Africa for partnering with us on this creative initiative, Swahili Beach Hotel for their continued hospitality, and all the passionate local entrepreneurs who joined us to explore what’s possible when community, innovation, and marine conservation meet.
