Our third Reef Ranger Traineeship

Writer: Guido PaapGuido Paap

Thanks to the generous support of Basecamp Explorer Foundation Kenya, we are thrilled to announce that we have new funding to expand our reef restoration efforts in Diani. This means we’re kicking off our third Reef Ranger Traineeship!

For the past few years, our Reef Rangers — marine biology graduates and local fishermen — have played a crucial role in restoring coral reefs, protecting marine life, and spreading awareness in the community. With this new funding, we are training five more members of the Mwakamba Beach Management Unit (BMU) to join the team. Over the next several months, they will gain essential skills in swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and coral reef restoration through our customised traineeship program.

Coral reefs are vital for marine biodiversity, coastal protection, and local livelihoods. However, they face constant threats from climate change, overfishing, and pollution. By training local community members as Reef Rangers, we are not only restoring the reef but also creating new opportunities for sustainable livelihoods through marine conservation and ecotourism.

The new trainees will begin their journey on March 1st, starting with swimming lessons before advancing to PADI Open Water Diver and Coral Reef Restoration Diver certifications. They will also participate in hands-on restoration activities at our Swahili Nurseries, where 1,200 corals are already thriving. As part of their training, they’ll learn how to maintain coral nurseries, engage with the local community, and support the protection of marine ecosystems.

In addition to welcoming new trainees, this funding also allows us to support the continued growth of our existing Reef Rangers. Our current team will receive advanced diving certifications, including PADI Advanced Open Water and Divemaster training, further strengthening their skills in coral reef restoration . These advanced skills will help them take on leadership roles in future restoration projects and mentor the next generation of Reef Rangers.

A huge thank you to Basecamp Explorer Foundation for believing in this project and supporting our mission. We can’t wait to welcome our new Reef Rangers and see them make an impact!

Stay tuned for updates as we follow their journey!
