Positive feedback on our pilot

Tinka Murk, professor dr. in Marine Animal Ecology at Wageningen University and one of the REEFolution Foundation's advisors, visited our project in Diani this month. She was impressed by what we have developed so far and told us the information centre looks great and the outreach activities developed are motivating and informative. The coral tree nurseries in Diani look good and quite some fish consider them their home. Tinka was shocked though to see a fish cage from which 7 large rabbitfish desperately tried to escape only a few meters away from the structures. The area is clearly overfished, and the nursery structures seem to be attractive to place fish traps nearby. In the end she noted that on the plot a low but nice coral reef still houses quite some biodiversity, so at least all seems to be there to support coral reef recovery.
